New Treatments for Chronic Pain
Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a new and exciting treatment
for people suffering from chronic pain.
Many people suffer with chronic pain from a multitude of different
causes including, but not limited to, back and neck injuries,
headache or migraine, arthritis, and fibromylagia. Medications
are often prescribed for these conditions, and surgical treatments
may be recommended and effective.
However despite these treatments some patients are left with
enduring chronic pain which effects functioning and satisfaction.
Pain itself is a stressor in someone’s
life. Through extensive research on pain we have learned that
stress from pain can itself
worsen pain. This can lead to a vicious circle of pain and stress
that can lead to further deterioration and the person struggling
with chronic pain can find his/herself stuck in a state of hopelessness
and despair about the impact that the disorder has had on life.
Pain is real and this real pain causes a stress reaction which
can be addressed in group sessions where people learn new ways
to identify stressors, and disconnect the pain-stress connection.
As well as improvement in levels of pain and functioning there
can be a decrease in anxiety and/or depression symptoms associated
with this difficult illness.
Chronic pain can increase stress and anxiety, and gradually
lead to the development of distorted thoughts and ideas, which
themselves can become stressful.
Cognitive therapy for chronic pain is an excellent and effective
addition to a treatment plan that should already include medical
and surgical treatments where recommended.
