Substance Use Treatment Approach

The following is the protocol outlined for patients with substance use related treatment goals. Initially, this will be a standardized approach with modifications being made to fit your needs as your treatment progresses.

You will have an initial appointment with either Dr. Oddy, or a Certified Addictions Counselor within the practice, to complete a clinical interview. This will involve a thorough review of your history and a chance to discuss potential treatment options. If your first appointment is with one of the therapists within our practice, you will need to complete a consultation appointment with Dr. Oddy to for a brief review of your history and to discuss medication options or concerns related to your situation. determine if suboxone treatment is appropriate for opiate dependence. In addition, you may discuss the possible benefit of including or adjusting other medications utilized in your care. In the process of developing your treatment plan, it may be determined that it is in your best interest to be titrated off other addictive or controlled medications, and abstain from other drugs of abuse, or alcohol abuse.

Once a medication plan has been agreed upon, you will have an appointment scheduled for your induction to initiate your suboxone treatment. This appointment may take at least one hour, as it will be important for Dr. Oddy to assess your response and to determine the proper dose. You will need to schedule a follow up appointment with Dr. Oddy to maintain evaluation of your treatment. Regular follow up appointments will be necessary but may be less frequent as your response becomes more stable. Dr. Oddy will develop a plan for the length of time suboxone management is indicated. Suboxone treatment will also involve random drug screens as a means to monitor use.

You will have two options for completing drug screens. Either through a traditional lab setting where you will be referred to submit to a urine drug screen, or, through an option that is facilitated in our office. The urine screen is submitted in a hospital laboratory setting. The drug screen that is offered in our office is a saliva screen that is administered in a non-medical setting. You will be asked to complete a drug screen on a random basis and will be expected to do so either during your office session or within the same day if you select the option of the urine drug screen.

Any suboxone medication treatment plan will include your involvement with substance use counseling. This will be addressed either through group or individual sessions with Ryan Scarborough, LCSW, CACIII, psychotherapist and addiction counselor. These sessions will include: past treatment interventions, goals for current intervention, identifying factors related to maintaining abstinence and relapse management/prevention and developing a detailed history of substance use. Other factors may present in the course of therapy that warrant ongoing sessions for additional therapeutic collaboration. This will be evaluated and agreed upon between you and your therapist. We are in the process of coordinating with insurance carriers to provide group-counseling sessions in a manner that will allow for efficient reimbursement allowing easier access and utilization of your health insurance. Once this is in place, you will be asked to make a commitment of participating in group counseling, in addition to your individual treatment, at least one time per month.
